All of the events of this chapter took place in Shushan (“Shushan” is the Hebrew name for this city while “Susa” is the Greek name), one of the four capital cities of the Medo-Persian empire, the other three being Babylon, Ecbatana, and Persipolis. Shushan was used as the winter capital because of its mild winter temperatures.
